Valetta Steel Crumley

Missionary Mentor/Extended Missionary Service

Valetta Steel Crumley, a missionary with OMS International, has served in a variety of capacities since joining the mission in 1959. Prior to her Taiwan appointment in 1982, Valetta coordinated a successful home meeting ministry and was in demand as a speaker. Presently, she is a Recruitment Counselor at world headquarters in Greenwood, Indiana, part of the training team relating to new missionaries. She speaks internationally in mission seminars, women’s retreats, mission conferences and student groups.

In Taiwan Valetta was heard daily over the Chung-Tai English radio broadcast and edited the Chung-Tai English/Chinese magazine. She also assisted in the coordination of English language ministries, which serve more than 1,000 students annually through the OMS Good News English Night School, evangelistic camps, Sunday rallies, Upper Room discipleship meetings, and home Bible studies.

Following graduation from Spring Arbor Junior College, Valetta married Henry Steel, a young pastor who fought a courageous but losing battle with Hodgkin’s disease. (His life story, Under Sentence of Death, is now in its ninth printing.) The Steels had three children, the first of whom died at age two of leukemia. In 1972 Valetta’s two teenagers, both dynamic Christians, were instantly killed in an auto accident. Turning her loneliness and heartache into a springboard, Valetta has ministered to thousands. Her book, Another Valley, Another Victory, Another Love, is available through the OMS bookroom, Box A, Greenwood, IN 46142. Her latest book, Another Valley, Another Victory, Another Love, is printed in English, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese, and several other languages. In September 1994 Valetta married Dr. A. F. Crumley, M.D., who served as a medical volunteer (1983, 84, 87, 94, and 96) at WGM Tenwek Hospital in Kenya. Since their marriage they have ministered together in 22 countries.

Valetta is a graduate of Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis with a B.G.S. degree. In 1986 she completed her Master’s degree in Human Resource Development from Azusa Pacific University, and in June 1997 she completed a MA in Religion, concentration in missions, from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
